CWS Glass Railing Systems: The Riviera Beach Owner’s Guide

The fastest way to identify what you have is to look at the bottom edge of a panel for an etched CWS logo and a series code, usually something like CWS-40 or CWS-60, which refers to the glass thickness in tenths of an inch (0.40″ or 0.60″). If the etch is worn or hidden, measure the glass thickness at the top edge with a caliper. On the base-shoe systems, the shoe profile itself is the identifier, CWS uses a few distinct channel shapes, and we keep profile samples on the truck to match them before ordering anything. One thing to know: CWS changed their base-shoe gasket material around 2016. The older gaskets were a harder vinyl that breaks down into stiff little crumbs under Florida sun; the newer EPDM gaskets last far longer. If your railing is pre-2016 and the gasket has started squeezing out of the shoe, the fix is a full shoe re-gasket, not just pushing it back in.

Signs Your CWS Glass Railing Systems Is Failing

• The top rail moves when you lean on it. This usually means the post anchors have started to loosen in the concrete or the aluminum post itself has fatigued at the base plate. On balconies that face the ocean or the inlet, salt air accelerates the corrosion on the anchor bolts, especially if they were installed without a good sealant bed.
• A crack runs from a mounting hole or a corner of the glass. Tempered glass fails in a specific way. A crack that starts at a point where the glass touches metal hardware means the panel is carrying load it was never meant to carry, often because a gasket has gone missing or a standoff has shifted. Once tempered glass shows a crack, the panel is done and needs replacement, not repair.
• White powder or staining at the base shoe or post feet. That is aluminum corrosion working its way under the powder coat. Riviera Beach sits in a salt-air zone, and we see it most on railings within a mile or two of the water. The corrosion can expand inside the shoe channel and put pressure on the glass edge, which is what turns a cosmetic issue into a broken panel.
• The glass rattles inside the base shoe on windy days. This almost always comes back to the gasket material. Old vinyl gaskets shrink and harden, and then the panel has room to move. The movement itself can chip the glass edge over time.
• Water stains or mineral buildup on the inside face of the glass near the bottom edge. That means the shoe’s drainage slots are clogged or were never drilled properly, and standing water is trapped against the glass. It does not break the panel by itself, but it accelerates gasket rot and aluminum pitting, and it is a good early warning that the whole bottom channel needs service.

DIY or Call Us?

There are things an owner can safely do: check that base-shoe drainage slots are clear, wipe down aluminum with fresh water every few months, and look for visible gaps between the glass and the gasket. What we would not recommend is trying to swap a tempered glass panel yourself. These panels are heavy, usually 60 to 90 pounds for a standard section, and they are under bending stress when being set into a shoe. A dropped panel or a chip at the edge from a mis-set wedge turns a $400 job into a significantly larger one, and the glass edge is not forgiving. The hardware side is not much friendlier. Loose post anchors on a balcony need to be drilled out and epoxy-set to the right depth and torque, because that anchor is what keeps the whole assembly on the building.
